Using the same freezer-paper piecing techniques MJ relies on to create her diamond portraits, students will create their own singularly beautiful work of faceted light. MJ created the Octagon Rose pattern after being inspired by this lovely octagonal crystal.

This is not foundation paper-piecing! We won’t sew to paper foundations so there’s no paper to tear out of the back of your quilt top. This is traditional piecing that uses freezer paper as your templates. If you can sew two pieces of fabric together with a 1/4-inch seam allowance, you can do this!

In this 3-hour live, online class, students will learn….

  • Multiple ways to manipulate value contrast across colors to create a sparkling gem
  • How certain types of fabrics (i.e. solids, prints, ombres, hand-dyes, or hand-painted fabric) impact the flow of light and color across a gem
  • How to read the codes printed on each facet to understand how to piece their gem
  • How to customize their gem into additional facets if desired
  • No-pressure piecing techniques that result in a lovely, 14” square gem block

Frequently Asked Questions
How do the live interactive classes work?
The class is taught on an online learning platform -- Zoom -- that allows you to see and interact with the teacher and the other class participants. At the scheduled time, the teacher and students will log in together -- everyone can see everyone else, so you can share work, ask questions, etc. You can view the class on a computer, tablet or phone (you may need to download the app). You will receive login instructions including links and passwords by email and text on the morning of the class. Please "arrive" online during the 30 minutes prior to class so you have time to get set up and learn to use the video conferencing tools.
How do I set up Zoom?
If you watch the class on a computer, you will receive instructions for downloading Zoom at the time you log into the class. If you watch the class on a mobile phone, go to Google Play or the App Store to download and install Zoom Cloud Meetings.
If you need help, you might want to ask a friend, a relative (grand kids are really good at this stuff!), or go to a computer store or library.  The teacher will be online 30-60 minutes before class begins to help get set up for the class.  Once you've done this the first time, it's easy after!
Can I get access to the class after the live session?
The class is recorded and posted online afterward in a private Facebook group, so you can go back and watch the class again if you want to review it or if you missed it.
Can I get help after class?
After class you will have access to a private Facebook group for people who took the same class. The recording of the class is posted there and you and other students can share your work. The teacher checks in from time to time to answer questions.
How long will I have access to the class?
The class ends at the end of the live video conference, but the recording of the class will remain available in the Facebook Group where you can access it.
